We regret to report that a charter bus that departed from Bastrop, Texas was struck by a freight train in Biloxi, Mississippi, resulting in four deaths and at least seven serious injuries. The charter bus was transporting 48 people, mostly senior citizens, and was heading to Boomtown Casino Biloxi in Biloxi when it was struck on Tuesday, March 7th in the afternoon. Eyewitness reports state that the bus got stuck on the train tracks while trying to cross.

After several minutes of being stalled on the tracks, passengers started to depart the vehicle. Only seven people were reportedly able to leave the bus before the train struck. It is not known how much time the train had before it saw the bus and applied the braking system.

One eyewitness said he thought the bus “bottomed out” and got stuck due to low ground clearance at the crossing. It is worth noting that there are signs designating the low ground clearance on each side of the tracks. Only two months prior, a truck transporting soda pop also became stuck on the tracks and was struck by a train – no injuries reported in that accident. 14 total accidents at that particular crossing – Main Street – are known to the Federal Railroad Administration. Liability could be placed on the bus driver, or eventually the charter company, for not noticing the low clearance warning. The city or state could also possibly be found negligent for not addressing a potential flaw in the crossing design that is getting so many larger vehicles stuck at that exact point.
