Preventing Elder Abuse

Elder abuse occurs in many different forms. It is not limited to physical abuse and neglect, but also involves financial abuse and exploitation. Be aware; be concerned. Protect our elderly — take care of those who took care of us.

Elder financial abuse encompasses a variety of conduct: taking money or property, forging signatures, manipulating an elderly person to sign legal documents such as powers of attorney through deceit or emotional pressure, fraud, failing to provide promised care in exchange for money or property, using property or funds without permission, establishing false dependency through deception, scare tactics, etc.

There may be legal avenues to remedy these situations.

Ideas for raising awareness on elder abuse in your community can be found on the website for the National Center on Elder Abuse, directed by the U.S. Administration on Aging.
